How the index is scored.

Six criteria, scored only from what each provider publishes.

Getting paid

Local receiving details in USD, EUR, GBP and other currencies, the number of currencies held, incoming fees, and payouts from marketplaces and platforms.

Paying suppliers

Countries and currencies reachable, the rails used (ACH, Fedwire, SWIFT, SEPA, Faster Payments), outbound fees, tracking, batch payments and stablecoin settlement where offered.

FX cost

The published margin above the mid-market or interbank rate, volume tiers and forward contracts.

Financing

Supplier finance, working capital, credit cards, letters of credit and guarantees.

Access and onboarding

Which countries of incorporation are accepted, non-resident directors, the stated time to open, documents, and whether there is a named person to speak to.

Protection and standing

Legal status (bank, e-money institution, or a fintech working through a licensed partner), where funds are held, deposit protection or safeguarding, insurance and the complaints route.

Score out of 100 is the sum of each criterion score divided by five and multiplied by its weight. The overall ranking is the mean of the three vertical scores. Ties are broken by FX cost, then by access. A provider that does not publish a fee is scored as though the fee were high, because a trading business cannot plan on an unpublished fee. FX is scored on the standard published rate, never an introductory, promotional or "from" rate, and a figure counts only when it appears on a pricing, fee or terms page rather than in a marketing line. A provider that serves companies registered in one country only is scored on access for that country, and the limitation is printed in its profile.

The badge.

Ranked providers may show the index badge on their own site.

The badge is free. The one condition is that it links to this page, so that a reader can check the score and the method behind it. It is withdrawn if the link is removed or the provider leaves the index.

Ranked in the BCC Global Trade Banking Index 2026

Questions.

Who pays for the BCC Global Trade Banking Index?

Nobody. No provider pays to be assessed, listed or ranked, there are no sponsored places, and the index page carries no referral links. Buckingham Capital Consulting publishes it as part of its work for trading businesses.

How does a provider get into the index?

Providers do not apply. BCC selects the accounts a trading business is likely to consider in each market and scores them from their own published pages. Any provider may ask to be assessed by emailing [email protected]; the request does not change the score.

Why is a provider scored 0 on a criterion?

Either it does not offer the thing measured, or it does not publish the figure. A trading business cannot plan on an unpublished fee, so the index scores it as though the fee were high.

Which account is best for an importer?

In the 2026 edition Wise Business ranks first for importers on the strength of published FX from 0.24% and payments in 40 or more currencies, with WorldFirst and Airwallex close behind on free local supplier payments. A business that needs trade finance alongside payments should read the HSBC UK profile.

Which account is best for a wholesaler outside the UK, US and EU?

Access decides it. 3S Money, Shield, Conduit, Slash, Payoneer, Currenxie and XTransfer open accounts for companies registered in Latin America, Asia and Africa without a US or UK entity; the profiles set out each one's published country rules.

Is Helm, BCC's group company, in the index?

Not in the 2026 edition. Helm's site did not publish its fees, regulator or partner banks on the date the index was read, so it could not be scored on the same terms as the other providers. It enters when those pages are published, on the same criteria.

How often is the index updated?

A new edition is published every October. Between editions, a provider's profile is corrected when its own page supports the correction, and the date read is updated.

Is this financial advice?

No. The index is a comparison of published facts. It is not a recommendation to open a particular account, and BCC is not an agent or appointed representative of any provider listed.
