Types of payment terminal.

Every modern terminal takes chip and PIN, contactless cards and phone wallets. Older names still appear in searches: a swipe machine read the magnetic stripe on the back of a card, which UK cards now rarely use, and an EFTPOS machine, short for electronic funds transfer at point of sale, is the Australian name for a card machine. The real choice is about where and how you take payments.

  • Card reader: a small device that pairs with a phone or tablet app, such as Square Reader or SumUp Solo Lite. Cheapest to buy, but needs the phone nearby.
  • Standalone terminal: works on its own with a screen and its own connection, such as SumUp Terminal, Square Terminal or Revolut Terminal.
  • Countertop terminal: wired at the till, often linked to an EPOS, such as Dojo Wired or Barclaycard countertop.
  • Smart or handheld POS terminal: a touch screen terminal, often running Android, the system used on many phones, that runs apps for orders, tables and stock as well as payments. Examples include Clover Flex, Square Handheld and the PAX A920 Pro used by Flatpay and Tyl by NatWest. These suit table service and queue busting.
  • mPOS: mobile point of sale, a phone or tablet till with a reader, such as Flatpay's mPOS package.

Payment terminals you can buy outright, read 26 October 2026.

Buying suits businesses that want low fixed costs and no contract. Prices exclude VAT where stated. Flatpay's terminal is free to start rather than bought.

  • Square Reader £19 + VAT; Square Terminal £149 + VAT; Square Handheld £169 + VAT.
  • SumUp Solo Lite £25, Solo £79, Terminal £135, all excluding VAT, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • PayPal Reader from £29 excluding VAT for one reader per new business user, then £69; PayPal Terminal £149.
  • Barclaycard Smartpay Anywhere £29 + VAT, with no monthly service fee.
  • Revolut Reader £49; Revolut Terminal £169 + VAT.
  • Stripe BBPOS WisePad 3 £49; S700 and S710 £229; T600 £249, all excluding VAT.
  • Lloyds Accept BBPOS WisePad 3 £49 + VAT; Stripe Reader S710 £230 + VAT.
  • Dojo Go Max £149 (launch offer, normally £229), Dojo Wired £179, Dojo Pocket £239.
  • Flatpay PAX A920 Pro: £0, free to start.

Payment terminals you rent, read 26 October 2026.

Renting spreads the cost, but it adds a fixed monthly charge and is often tied to a contract. All prices are per terminal per month.

When you compare, add any monthly charges that come with the rental. Paymentsense also publishes a minimum monthly service charge of £24.95, a PCI fee of £4.95 + VAT and a reporting fee of £12.95 after three free months. Lloyds Cardnet has a £10 minimum monthly charge.

  • Tyl by NatWest: PAX A80 £13.99, PAX A50 £14.99, PAX A920 Pro £19.99, all + VAT, on a 12-month contract.
  • Dojo: Wired £15, Pocket £20, Go Max £25.
  • Clover: Flex Pocket and Flex £15, Mini £20, Station Duo £30, all + VAT.
  • Barclaycard: countertop £16, portable £18, Smartpay Touch £29 monthly service fees, all + VAT; 18 months for countertop and portable, 12 months for Touch.
  • Paymentsense: £20.00 + VAT.
  • Worldpay: £20.00 on its quote tool, indicative only, minimum 18-month contract.
  • Lloyds Cardnet: Clover Flex £21 and Castles Saturn £23, + VAT.

Buy or rent: three-year cost worked example.

A business takes £4,000 a month at an average of £25, so 160 payments, or £48,000 a year. Here is the total over 36 months of card fees plus the terminal, at published prices read 26 October 2026, before VAT and on UK consumer cards.

In this example, buying a terminal with a low rate wins over three years. Renting only pays off when the rental comes with a much lower card rate, which you usually need a quote to get.

  • Revolut Terminal: £169 plus 0.8% + 2p, £35.20 a month, so £1,436.20.
  • Dojo Go Max bought: £149 plus 1.2%, £48.00 a month, so £1,877.00. Rented at £25 a month: £2,628.00.
  • Flatpay PAX A920 Pro: £0 plus 1.49%, £59.60 a month, so £2,145.60.
  • SumUp Terminal: £135 plus 1.69%, £67.60 a month, so £2,568.60.
  • Square Terminal: £149 plus 1.75%, £70.00 a month, so £2,669.00.
  • Tyl by NatWest PAX A80: £13.99 a month plus 1.39% + 5p, £63.60, so £2,793.24.
  • Paymentsense: £20 a month plus 1.40% + 5p, £64.00, so £3,024.00, plus its PCI fee.

What to check before you choose a terminal.

Price is only part of the decision. A terminal you cannot use outside, or one that ties you into a long contract, can cost more in the end. Use this list before you order.

Warranty and returns differ too. Teya includes a lifetime warranty on its card machine. SumUp gives a 30-day money-back guarantee from delivery. If you rent, ask what happens when the machine breaks and how fast a replacement arrives.

  • Connection: Wi-Fi only, a SIM card for mobile data, or a phone link. Pick a SIM for outdoor or mobile work.
  • Printer: built in, or receipts by text and email only.
  • Battery life if you carry it around all day.
  • Card types and rates, including American Express and business cards.
  • Contract length and exit costs. SumUp, Square, Zettle and Revolut state no contract; Worldpay states a minimum of 18 months.
  • Whether it links to your till or EPOS, if you use one.
  • Support hours: Teya says 24/7 UK-based support; Barclaycard existing customer lines are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

Get the best rate for your business.

The terminal price is easy to see. The rate and monthly charges behind it are where the money goes. We compare the whole UK market, including Dojo, SumUp, Teya, Flatpay, Paymentsense, Square, Worldpay and others, on your takings, and work out whether buying or renting costs less for you. Then we negotiate the rate with the provider. We also compare the rental and contract terms side by side, so you see the full three-year cost.

We order the terminal, handle the switch from your current provider, and give you a named account manager who stays with you after setup. If the terminal breaks or you need a second one, your account manager arranges it with the provider. You pay us nothing. We may receive a fee from the provider you choose.
