Zettle, iZettle and PayPal Point of Sale: one product.

Many people still search for an iZettle card machine or an iZettle machine. Zettle's own pricing page now states that Zettle by PayPal becomes PayPal Point of Sale. In practice you are looking at the same thing: a PayPal card reader or terminal, the free PayPal POS app, and payments paid into a PayPal Business account.

The card machine works with the PayPal POS app, which PayPal describes as its no-additional-cost app, available from the Apple Store and Google Play Store. The app also lets you take Tap to Pay payments on your phone. PayPal does not state a separate Tap to Pay rate, so the standard 1.75% card rate is the figure to plan around.

Two things are not on the pricing page: customer support details and regulatory status. If you want a phone number before you buy, ask PayPal directly. All figures here were read on 26 October 2026.

Zettle card machine fees in 2026.

Zettle keeps its pricing to one figure for in-person card payments: 1.75% per transaction, the same rate for major cards and mobile wallets, even American Express. That is useful for businesses with many Amex customers, as some providers charge more for those cards. Custom rates are possible, subject to a specific agreement with PayPal.

There are no contracts or recurring fees, and no long-term commitments or rentals. Other published charges are:

Because one rate covers every major card, you do not need to track which card your customers use. Your monthly cost is simply 1.75% of your card takings, plus anything you take by invoice or payment link at 2.5%.

  • PayPal QR Codes: 1.75%.
  • Zettle Invoice: 2.5%.
  • Payment Links: 2.5% (for legacy sellers).
  • No PCI fee, chargeback fee or minimum monthly fee is published.

Zettle card reader and terminal prices.

The PayPal Reader is from £29. The offer is one reader per new business user at £29 excluding VAT. Additional card readers cost £69 excluding VAT. The PayPal Terminal costs £149 excluding VAT, and Store Kits, which bundle hardware for a counter, start from £169 excluding VAT. Delivery fees apply to hardware.

Because you buy the hardware, there is no monthly rental. A business that would otherwise pay £20 a month to hire a terminal spends £240 a year. The PayPal Reader costs £29 once, and the PayPal Terminal £149 once.

Payouts are the standout feature. Funds typically arrive in your PayPal Business account within minutes. From there you can spend the balance or set up automatic transfers to your bank with no added fee. For a market trader who needs cash for stock the same day, that matters more than a small difference in rate.

What Zettle costs: worked examples.

On £2,000 a month of card sales at 1.75%, you pay £35 a month. On £5,000 a month you pay £87.50, and on £10,000 you pay £175.

For a mainly American Express business, Zettle's flat 1.75% is predictable: a £100 Amex sale costs £1.75, the same as a debit card. SumUp's pay-as-you-go rate of 1.69% also includes Amex, and costs £1.69 on the same sale.

Compare the first year at £3,000 a month. Zettle costs £630 in fees plus £29 for the first reader, a total of £659. SumUp at 1.69% costs £608.40 plus £79 for a Solo, a total of £687.40, though a £25 Solo Lite brings that to £633.40. Dojo at 1.2% costs £432 plus £149 for a Go Max, a total of £581.

The lesson: at low volumes the hardware price matters most. As takings grow, the rate matters more, and Zettle's 1.75% falls behind the lower published rates.

Who Zettle suits and who it does not suit.

This review uses PayPal's published Zettle pricing, read on 26 October 2026.

  • Suits: businesses already using PayPal, who want card takings in the same account within minutes.
  • Suits: market stalls, pop-ups and events, thanks to a £29 reader and no monthly fee.
  • Suits: businesses with many American Express customers who want one flat rate.
  • Suits: anyone who wants no contract and no rental.
  • Does not suit: businesses taking more than a few thousand pounds a month, where 1.75% costs more than Dojo's 1.2% or Flatpay's 1.49%.
  • Does not suit: owners who want a published support phone line and opening hours before they buy.
  • Does not suit: businesses that want takings paid straight to their high street bank, as funds go to PayPal first and then transfer.

Alternatives worth comparing.

Zettle competes most directly with the other buy-the-reader providers. These four are the closest comparisons, with figures read on 26 October 2026.

If you take mainly UK debit and credit cards, Revolut's and myPOS's lower starting rates are worth checking, but note their fixed per-payment fees of £0.02 and £0.07. If you value instant access to takings and use PayPal already, Zettle stays a sensible choice.

  • SumUp: 1.69% including American Express, no monthly fee; Solo Lite £25 and Solo £79 excluding VAT.
  • Square: 1.75% on UK cards, Square Reader £19 + VAT, free Point of Sale apps.
  • myPOS: from 1.10% + £0.07 per transaction under £10,000 a month, £0 fixed monthly costs, payments into a myPOS account instantly.
  • Revolut Business card reader: from 0.8% + £0.02 on consumer UK Visa and Mastercard, 1.7% on American Express; Revolut Reader £49.

Get the best rate for your business.

Zettle's 1.75% is the same for every major card, which is simple but rarely the cheapest option once your takings grow. PayPal itself offers custom rates by specific agreement. We compare the whole UK card machine market for your business, including providers that only quote in private. We take your real monthly takings, average sale and card mix to them and negotiate the rate on your behalf, so you are not comparing headline figures that do not fit your trade.

We then handle the switch for you, from the application to the timing of any exit from your current contract, so you are not left without a working card machine. You get a named account manager who stays with you after setup and checks your rate as your business grows. You pay us nothing for this. We may receive a fee from the provider you choose.
