Elavon card machine review: fees, support and what to ask.

Elavon publishes almost no prices. Here is what it does say, the questions to put to its sales team, and how published alternatives such as Dojo, Barclaycard, Worldpay and Paymentsense compare.

We compare the whole market.

Published rates from every major UK card machine provider, plus the quoted rates that only come on request. You see them side by side, on your own takings.

The short answer

Elavon does not publish its card machine fees, read 26 October 2026: pricing depends on your payment channels, transaction profile, equipment and business needs, and you request a sales callback. What it does publish is 24-hour, 365-day technical support and next-day funding options for eligible businesses. Elavon is U.S. Bank Europe DAC, regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland and subject to FCA regulation.

Elavon card machine fees: quote only.

Elavon does not publish a transaction rate, monthly fee, terminal price or contract term on its UK site, read 26 October 2026. Its wording is that pricing depends on your payment channels, transaction profile, equipment and business needs, and it asks you to request a sales callback.

Your transaction profile means how much you take, your average sale and the types of card your customers use. Your payment channels means whether you take payments in person, over the phone or online. All four affect the price you are offered.

That makes Elavon impossible to compare from its website alone. It does not mean Elavon is expensive. Large card payment firms often quote because a high-volume business can negotiate a lower rate than any published one. It does mean you need a full written quote before you can judge it, and you should get at least two others on the same numbers.

  • Transaction rate: quote only
  • Monthly fee: not published
  • Terminal cost: not published
  • Contract terms: not published
  • Other fees: not published

What to ask Elavon for in writing.

Because nothing is published, the quote is everything. Ask for these, in writing, before you sign:

  • The rate for each card type: personal debit, personal credit, business, premium and American Express
  • Any authorisation fee, the small fixed charge each time a payment is approved
  • The monthly terminal rental or purchase price, and what happens to the machine at the end
  • The contract length, and the exact cost of leaving early
  • Any minimum monthly service charge (MMSC), which means you pay the difference if your fees fall below a set amount
  • PCI DSS fees, the charge for meeting the card industry's security standard, and any fee for not completing it
  • Chargeback and refund fees, and whether next-day funding applies to you

Elavon card machine costs: worked examples.

To judge an Elavon quote, set it against published figures. Take a restaurant with £8,000 a month of card sales, which is £96,000 a year. On Dojo's 1.2% blended rate, which applies under £100,000 a year, fees are £96 a month. On Paymentsense's default pricing of 1.40% for personal debit and credit cards, fees are £112, plus a £20.00 + VAT terminal rental and a £4.95 + VAT PCI fee. Worldpay's quote tool shows an indicative £20.00 a month terminal and a £15.00 minimum monthly service charge.

So if Elavon quotes, for example, 1.0% with a £20 rental, the total on £8,000 is £80 plus £20, so £100, close to Dojo with a rented machine. If it quotes 0.8%, the total is £84 and Elavon wins. Always add every monthly fee to the rate before comparing.

Elavon reviews: support, funding and who stands behind it.

People searching for Elavon card machine reviews usually want to know two things: will someone help when the machine stops, and is the company solid. Elavon publishes clear answers to both, but no review score, so judge on the facts.

On support, Elavon advertises technical support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, alongside customer care. That is among the widest promised support hours in the UK market, matched by Worldpay's 24/7 team and Flatpay's 24/7 email and phone support.

On payouts, Elavon says next-day funding options are available for eligible businesses. Ask whether your business qualifies, because without it settlement may take longer.

On the company, U.S. Bank Europe DAC, trading as Elavon Merchant Services, is a credit institution authorised and regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland. It is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and subject to regulation by the Financial Conduct Authority. It is part of a large banking group, not a start-up.

Who it suits / who it does not suit.

Elavon suits established businesses with steady or high card volumes, such as hotels, restaurants and multi-site retailers, that will negotiate a tailored deal and value round-the-clock technical support. It also suits businesses taking payments across several channels that want one provider.

It does not suit new or small businesses that want to see the price and sign up online in minutes. A sole trader taking £1,500 a month is better served by a published, no-contract option such as SumUp at 1.69% or Revolut from 0.8% + 2p, where the cost is clear from day one.

  • Suits: established, higher-volume businesses
  • Suits: businesses that need 24/7 technical support
  • Does not suit: new businesses wanting instant sign-up
  • Does not suit: anyone wanting a published price

Alternatives worth comparing.

Dojo publishes 1.2% on all cards under £100,000 a year and a custom rate above it, with a choice of a 12-month fixed plan or 30-day rolling. Barclaycard quotes rates but publishes monthly fees from £16 + VAT and contract terms of 12 or 18 months, with up to £1,000 towards exit fees.

Worldpay quotes rates, shows an indicative terminal at £20 a month, requires a minimum 18-month contract on online applications and offers 24/7 support. Paymentsense publishes default rates of 1.40% for personal debit and credit cards and 1.99% for business cards, with bespoke pricing above £150,000 a year.

The practical approach is to get Elavon's quote and at least two of these on the same takings, average sale and card mix. Then add every monthly fee to the rate and compare the totals. The lowest headline rate is not always the cheapest deal.

Get the best rate for your business.

Choosing between Elavon and the alternatives on this page takes time, and the published figures are only the starting point. We compare the whole UK market on your own numbers: your monthly card takings, your average sale and the cards your customers use. For a quote-only provider like Elavon, we ask for every fee in writing and lay it beside published rates so the true monthly cost is clear. Then we negotiate the rate with the provider that fits, so you are not left to haggle alone.

We also handle the switch for you, from the application to the day your new machine arrives, and you get a named account manager who stays with you after setup. If your rate creeps up or your business changes, you have one person to call. You pay us nothing: we may receive a fee from the provider you choose. Fill in the quote form and we will come back with a clear comparison.
