Worldpay card machine fees in 2026.

Worldpay sells on tailored pricing. Its small business page says it offers tailored custom pricing plans and variable pricing options. The pricing link sends you to an online quote tool, which shows a rate only after you enter your business details, and marks all figures as indicative. With no details entered, the transaction rate shows as zero, so there is no published rate to quote.

The quote tool does show the other charges by default. Each is explained in plain words below. All were read on 26 October 2026.

  • Point-of-sale terminal: £20.00 per terminal per month. This is the card machine hire.
  • Authorisation fee: 4.5p. A small fixed charge each time a card payment is checked and approved.
  • PCI DSS service fee: £5.00 a month. PCI DSS is the card industry's security standard for handling card data.
  • Minimum monthly service charge (MMSC): £15.00. A floor on your monthly service charges if your fees come in low.
  • Chargeback fee: £20.00. Charged when a customer disputes a payment through their bank.
  • Payment gateway: included. A gateway is the link that lets you take payments online.

The Worldpay contract: 18 months minimum.

Worldpay's small business page states a minimum 18-month contract for online applications, and no joining fee. That is longer than many rivals. Dojo offers a 12-month fixed plan or a 30-day rolling plan on its custom tier. takepayments and Tyl by NatWest each state a 12-month contract. SumUp, Square and Zettle have no contract at all.

A longer contract is not bad in itself if the rate is good. The risk is being locked in if your takings grow and better rates appear elsewhere, or if your business changes. Before you sign, ask Worldpay three things in writing: the exact transaction rate for each card type, what it costs to leave early, and whether the terminal hire ends with the contract.

Worldpay states next-day settlement, which means takings reach your bank the next day, and its quote tool shows a settlement time of 24 hours. It offers 24/7 customer support. Terminal names, Tap to Pay and point of sale software were not published on the pages we read, so ask which Worldpay card reader you will be given.

What a Worldpay machine costs: worked examples.

Because Worldpay does not publish a rate, start with the fixed costs you know. The terminal at £20 and the PCI DSS fee at £5 come to £25 a month, or £450 over an 18-month contract, before you take a single payment.

Next add the authorisation fee. A café taking £5,000 a month in 500 payments of £10 pays 500 times 4.5p, which is £22.50 a month. So whatever rate you are quoted, add £47.50 a month in fixed and per-payment charges.

Now compare. Dojo's published 1.2% on £5,000 is £60 a month in fees, on its free Essential plan, plus a machine from £149 upfront. For Worldpay to match £60 a month, its transaction charge on £5,000 would need to be £12.50 or less, which is 0.25%. Each 0.1% on the rate adds £5 a month on £5,000 of sales.

Larger average sales change the picture. A shop taking £5,000 in 100 payments of £50 pays £4.50 in authorisation fees, so its fixed and per-payment charges drop to £29.50.

Who Worldpay suits and who it does not suit.

This review uses Worldpay's published pages and the default figures in its quote tool, read on 26 October 2026.

Do not judge Worldpay on the name alone. Ask for a written quote and compare it against providers that publish their rates.

  • Suits: established businesses with steady, higher takings, where a tailored rate can outweigh the fixed monthly charges.
  • Suits: businesses that want 24/7 customer support.
  • Suits: owners who also want online payments, as the gateway is included.
  • Does not suit: new or seasonal businesses, because £25 a month in fixed charges and a £15 minimum apply even in quiet months.
  • Does not suit: anyone unsure of their plans for the next 18 months.
  • Does not suit: businesses with many small payments, where a 4.5p authorisation fee adds up quickly.

Alternatives worth comparing.

The closest comparisons to Worldpay are other providers that rent terminals and serve established businesses. Figures read on 26 October 2026.

Ask each provider for the same thing: the rate for each card type, every monthly charge, the per-payment fee and the exit cost. Put those side by side with your Worldpay quote, using your own monthly takings and average sale, and the cheapest option is usually clear.

  • Dojo: 1.2% blended rate under £100,000 a year, with 12-month fixed or 30-day rolling plans above that and a contract buyout up to £3,000.
  • Paymentsense: 1.40% on UK Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards, 5p authorisation fee, £20 + VAT per terminal per month.
  • Barclaycard Payments (Smartpay): customised pricing; portable reader £18 + VAT a month on an 18-month contract, and up to £1,000 towards exit fees when you switch.
  • Tyl by NatWest: 1.39% + 5p on personal cards under £50,000 a year, PAX A920 Pro £19.99 + VAT a month, 12-month contract.

Get the best rate for your business.

Worldpay quotes every business individually, so the rate you are offered depends on how your case is presented and what you are compared against. We compare the whole UK card machine market for your business, including providers that only quote in private. We take your real monthly takings, average sale and card mix to them and negotiate the rate on your behalf, so you are not comparing headline figures that do not fit your trade.

We then handle the switch for you, from the application to the timing of any exit from your current contract, so you are not left without a working card machine. You get a named account manager who stays with you after setup and checks your rate as your business grows. You pay us nothing for this. We may receive a fee from the provider you choose.
