Revolut card machine fees: the published rates.

Revolut says card fees start from 0.8% + £0.02, read 26 October 2026. Its fee schedule breaks this down: consumer UK cards cost 0.8% of the transaction value for Mastercard and Visa, 1.7% for American Express, and other cards 2.6% of the transaction value, each with a flat fee of £0.02 in pounds. "Other cards" covers cards outside the consumer UK Visa and Mastercard group, so business cards and many overseas cards can cost far more than the headline. Revolut Pay, Revolut's own app payment, costs 0.5% + £0.02.

There are no contracts, no extra subscription costs and no maintenance fees for the card reader. You do need a Revolut Business account, and its paid plans carry their own fees; the fee schedule lists the Grow plan at £35 a month or £360 a year.

One point to confirm: the fee schedule at Revolut's legal page names Revolut Bank UAB as the provider, not the UK bank. Ask Revolut to confirm in writing which rates apply to your UK account before relying on them.

  • Consumer UK Visa and Mastercard: 0.8% + £0.02
  • American Express: 1.7% + £0.02
  • Other cards: 2.6% + £0.02
  • Revolut Pay: 0.5% + £0.02

What Revolut costs on real takings: worked examples.

Take a hairdresser with £5,000 a month of card sales at an average of £40, which is 125 payments, all on consumer UK Visa and Mastercard. Fees are 0.8% (£40) plus 125 x 2p (£2.50), so £42.50 a month. On SumUp's 1.69% the same takings cost £84.50, and on Dojo's 1.2% blended rate £60.

Now change the card mix. If 20% of that £5,000 is on business and overseas cards at 2.6%, those £1,000 of sales cost £26 instead of £8. If another 10% is American Express at 1.7%, that £500 costs £8.50 instead of £4. The monthly total rises from £42.50 to about £64.50. That is still competitive, but it is above Dojo's £60, which uses one rate for all cards.

The lesson is simple: Revolut is cheapest when most of your customers pay with ordinary UK debit and credit cards. Check your last three months of card sales by card type before you decide.

Revolut Reader and Revolut Terminal.

Revolut sells two devices. The Revolut Reader costs £49, and the Revolut Terminal costs £169 + VAT, read 26 October 2026. Delivery fees apply. You buy them outright, so there is no monthly rental.

The Reader is the low-cost choice for traders who already carry a phone. The Terminal is the dearer option for businesses that want a standalone machine. Revolut also offers a Point of Sale app for iPad, with no price stated, and its fee schedule lists the Revolut ePOS fee as none.

You can also skip hardware entirely with Tap to Pay on iPhone, which lets you accept contactless cards on your phone. The fee schedule shows the same percentages as the reader, 0.8% for consumer UK Visa and Mastercard, but a flat fee of £0.10 per payment instead of £0.02. On 250 payments a month, that is £25 in flat fees rather than £5, so a £49 Reader pays for itself within a few months for a busy trader.

Payouts, support and regulation.

Revolut says you can access your funds within 24 hours, with a 24-hour settlement time. Settlement is when card takings arrive in your account. No payout fee is stated. Money lands in your Revolut Business account, which you can use for supplier payments and cards.

Support is through the in-app chat or by email at [email protected]. No phone line or hours are stated. For a business that needs to speak to someone straight away when a machine fails on a busy Saturday, that is a weakness compared with Dojo, which promises a real person in the UK in minutes, or Clover's 7-day phone support.

Revolut publishes a chargeback fee of £15 and an arbitration loss fee of £475. A chargeback is when a customer disputes a payment through their bank; arbitration is the final stage if the dispute is not settled. The UK firm is Revolut Bank UK Ltd, authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, Financial Services Register No. 981170.

Who it suits / who it does not suit.

Revolut suits small businesses that already bank with Revolut or are happy to, whose customers mostly pay with UK personal cards, and who want low costs with no contract. Hairdressers, beauty salons, cafés and trades with a local customer base are the best fit.

It suits businesses less well if many customers pay with business cards, overseas cards or American Express, because those cost 1.7% to 2.6%. It is also less suited to businesses that want phone support, or that want card takings paid straight into an existing high-street bank account.

  • Suits: mostly UK personal card customers
  • Suits: owners who want no contract and a bought reader
  • Does not suit: high share of business, overseas or Amex cards
  • Does not suit: anyone who needs phone support

Alternatives worth comparing.

SumUp charges a flat 1.69% for all in-person cards on pay-as-you-go, including American Express and premium cards, or 0.99% on domestic cards with Payments Plus at £19 a month. It is simpler if your card mix is varied. Dojo charges 1.2% on every card under £100,000 a year, which beats Revolut once a meaningful share of your takings is on premium or business cards.

Square charges 1.75% for UK cards with a £19 + VAT Reader and phone support on 0800 098 8008. myPOS starts from 1.10% + £0.07 and pays into its own account instantly, though GBP transfers out cost £1.50. Compare on your real card mix, not the headline rate.

If phone support matters to you, note that Square lists a phone number and Dojo promises a UK person in minutes, while Revolut offers in-app chat and email. If no contract matters most, SumUp, Square and Revolut all let you leave at any time.

Get the best rate for your business.

Choosing between Revolut and the alternatives on this page takes time, and the published figures are only the starting point. We compare the whole UK market on your own numbers: your monthly card takings, your average sale and the cards your customers use. For Revolut, that means pricing your actual card mix, including business, overseas and American Express cards, not just the 0.8% starting rate. Then we negotiate the rate with the provider that fits, so you are not left to haggle alone.

We also handle the switch for you, from the application to the day your new machine arrives, and you get a named account manager who stays with you after setup. If your rate creeps up or your business changes, you have one person to call. You pay us nothing: we may receive a fee from the provider you choose.
