How the index is scored.

6 criteria, scored only from what each provider publishes.

Product range

The number of financing types published, such as revenue-based finance (an advance repaid as a fixed share of future sales), term loans, lines of credit (a limit you draw from and repay as needed), and invoice or purchase financing.

Published pricing

An exact fee, interest rate or representative APR (the yearly cost including fees, as a percentage) with a worked example, on a pricing or terms page. "From", "starting at" and "as low as" prices do not count.

Published eligibility

Whether the provider publishes its minimum revenue, minimum time trading and the countries it lends in.

Limits and speed

The published minimum and maximum amounts and the time from approval to money in the account.

Borrower terms

Whether the provider states that it takes no personal guarantee (a promise by the owner to repay from personal assets), no warrants or equity (rights to buy shares in the business), and no charge for repaying early.

Regulatory standing

A lending licence, regulator register entry or regulated lending bank named with its number, and a security certification such as SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001.

Score out of 100 is the sum of each criterion score divided by five and multiplied by its weight. The overall ranking is the mean of the segment scores. Ties are broken by published pricing, then borrower terms. A provider that does not publish a price is scored as though the price were high, because a business cannot plan on an unpublished price. Prices are scored on the standard published rate, never an introductory, promotional or "from" rate, and a figure counts only when it appears on a pricing, fee or terms page rather than in a marketing line. A provider that serves one country only is scored on access for that country, and the limitation is printed in its profile.

Ranked in the Buckingham Capital Consulting Revenue-Based and Working Capital Finance Index 2026

Questions.

Who pays for the Buckingham Capital Consulting Revenue-Based and Working Capital Finance Index?

Nobody. No provider pays to be assessed, listed or ranked.

What is revenue-based finance?

Money advanced to a business that it repays as a fixed share of its future sales, usually for a single fixed fee. When sales fall, repayments fall with them; when sales rise, the advance is repaid sooner. A merchant cash advance is a form of it in which the provider buys a share of future card or online sales.

Why do "from" and "as low as" prices not count?

A "from" or "as low as" price is the best rate offered to the strongest applicants and does not tell a business what it will pay. Only an exact fee, a stated range or a representative APR with a worked example counts.

Is business finance regulated?

Often not. Several providers in this index state that their business financing is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and US providers often lend through partner banks or state lending licences. The index scores what each provider publishes about its licence or lending bank so that a business can check it.

How often is the index updated?

Every provider is re-read monthly and a new edition is published every October.

Is this advice?

No. The index compares published facts and is not a recommendation to use a particular provider.
