How the index is scored.

6 criteria, scored only from what each provider publishes.

Screening coverage

Whether one provider publishes all five parts: sanctions screening, PEP screening (checks for politically exposed persons, meaning people in prominent public roles and their family and close associates), adverse media screening (searching news for links to crime), ongoing monitoring of existing customers, and payment screening (checking the parties to each payment before it is sent).

Published pricing

Per-search, per-entity or monthly prices with the volume included, on a pricing page. "From", "starting at" and prices shown only after a sales form do not count.

Data depth and freshness

The published number of lists or sources screened and how often the data is updated after a regulator changes a list.

Matching and alert handling

Fuzzy matching (finding a name despite spelling differences), matching across languages and scripts, adjustable match thresholds, and automated review of alerts with a record of each decision.

Integration

An API (a way for the firm's own systems to send checks automatically), batch or file upload, a web screening tool, and self-serve sign-up or a free trial.

Security and clients

Security certifications such as ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II, and regulated banks, payment or e-money firms named as clients.

Score out of 100 is the sum of each criterion score divided by five and multiplied by its weight. The overall ranking is the mean of the segment scores. Ties are broken by screening coverage, then data depth and freshness. A provider that does not publish a price is scored as though the price were high, because a business cannot plan on an unpublished price. Prices are scored on the standard published rate, never an introductory, promotional or "from" rate, and a figure counts only when it appears on a pricing, fee or terms page rather than in a marketing line. A provider that serves one country only is scored on access for that country, and the limitation is printed in its profile.

Ranked in the Buckingham Capital Consulting Sanctions and Adverse Media Screening Index 2026

Questions.

Who pays for the Buckingham Capital Consulting Sanctions and Adverse Media Screening Index?

Nobody. No provider pays to be assessed, listed or ranked.

What is the difference between sanctions screening and adverse media screening?

Sanctions screening checks a name against official lists of people, companies and ships that governments have barred from dealing, such as the US OFAC list or the UK sanctions list. Adverse media screening searches news and other published sources for links between a name and crimes such as fraud, bribery or money laundering. Regulators expect both.

Why does data freshness matter?

A new sanctions designation applies from the moment it is published. If a provider updates its lists once a day, a payment to a newly sanctioned person can pass in the gap. Providers that publish hourly or faster updates score higher.

Why do "from" prices not count?

A "from" or "starting at" price is the lowest price for the smallest plan and does not tell a firm what it will pay. Only a published per-search, per-entity or monthly price with its volume counts.

Does using a screening provider meet my sanctions obligations?

No. The firm stays responsible for its own sanctions controls under its regulator's and government's rules. A provider supplies the lists and the matching; the firm's policies, risk assessment and people decide what to do with each alert.

How often is the index updated?

Every provider is re-read monthly and a new edition is published every October.
